Soapbox Rant For the Day

We live in interesting times. I heard someone say today that the Depression Generation knew how to do without and to save. We are all coming to grips with our obsession for stuff and trying to have a lifestyle that we really can't afford. There is too much out there beckoning us to live like the rich and famous when the reality is, we don't need it to experience a fulfilling life. I see us (the nation) having to learn some very hard lessons lately about our spending habits and lack of preparation for a rainy day. It is scary and the only way to fix it is for us to start saving what we can, pay off our debt and not spend more than we make. How much do we really need to be happy and have a happy family? I can tell you, not as much as we are told we need. I am upset at myself for being part of the problem and hope that from here on out I can be part of the solution.
Good advise we found to help us keep our focus:
1. Don't just go to the mall or shopping and look around or hang out. You find things you think you need and spend money you didn't plan on spending.
2. Save, even if it is 5$ a month.
3. Keep the TV off. If you don't see lifestyles of the rich and famous, you don't feel like you are missing out. Besides, there isn't much that's good on TV.
4. Don't waste food, cook at home and don't go out as much. It makes going out special too.
5. Get rid of the credit cards. If you don't have them, you can't use them. Then we really see what it takes to live on what we make.
6. Follow a budget and stick to it by taking out cash and only spending the cash. When it is gone, no more spending.
Okay, my little rant is over.
